Des Hamilton, Casting Director

Veteran Casting Director Des Hamilton is a Full Member of The Casting Directors’ Guild (CDG) and head of Des Hamilton Casting.

The business is run from its Glasgow and London offices, both national centres of film production, which also allows easy access to regional casting projects. The team casts performers for projects across film, television, commercials and music videos, using trained actors and raw talent as the brief requires.

Des Hamilton is particularly known for spotting talent in unlikely places. He himself fought his way out of years of drug addiction which first took hold in his early teens. A series of chance events brought him onto film sets as an actor and then into casting. When television projects require authentic casting from overlooked communities in the UK, his lived experience is invaluable. He’s widely known for discovering actor Thomas Turgoose when he was a child living in difficult circumstances.

With more than two decades of casting experience, he has roughly a hundred film and television credits. They include feature films Jojo Rabbit (2019), High Life (2018), Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016), Four Lions (2010), Valhalla Rising (2009), and This Is England (2006). In addition, he cast TV mini-series Gunpowder and TV series Top Boy.

For his work on the feature film The King (2019), Des Hamilton was nominated for an AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) Award for Best Casting.

Casting for Top Boy earned him a nomination for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Awards) for Television Craft Scripted Casting in 2020.
